Hi, Office Insiders! My name is Malu Harten, and I’m a Software Engineer on the Office Graphics Team. I am happy to share that WebP images are now fully supported in Office apps for Windows.

Insert WebP images into Office creations

WebP is a modern image format that offers better compression for publishing images to the web. As part of our work to enable insertion of HEIF and HEIC images into Office creations, we heard that many of you are using WebP images. So, we decided to upgrade the experience and add this format option for your Office files as well.

How it works

Here’s how to add a WebP image in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook:

  1. On the Insert tab, select Pictures > This Device.

2. Select the WebP (*.webp) image you want to include in your creation.

3. Click the Insert button.

You can also drag and drop WebP files from File Explorer into your Office app. Note that this new functionality is fully compatible with previous versions of Office, so those running older versions will also be able to view the WebP images.

Requirements

If you haven’t already done so, you will need to install the Webp Image Extensions, which are available to download for free.

Availability

This feature is available to Current Channel (Preview) users running Version 2105 (Build 14026.10000) or later, in Windows OS build 1809 (17763) or later.
