Hi, Office Insiders! My name is Meenakshi Naren and I’m a Program Manager on the Excel team. I’d like to share that you can now open and edit files containing legacy art objects in Excel for the web.
Legacy art objects
Excel now supports opening files containing legacy art objects in edit mode. Users can edit workbooks that have objects like Active X, Form Control, OLE, and Camera Tools objects. We’ve heard from many of you that sessions were being blocked for editing due to legacy art objects. We’re thankful your feedback allowed us to identify and remedy this issue.

How it works
Open a file that has legacy art objects in Excel for the web, and notice that the file opens in Edit mode.
Note: Legacy art objects are not editable.
Known issues
- Any workbook containing Excel 4.0 macros will not open in Excel for the web.
- Files with xlsb/xls format will still not open. Supported formats include xlsx/xlsm.
Requirements
You will need permissions to the Excel workbook with editing rights.
Availability
We will be rolling this feature out in Excel for the web starting in late February.
Features are released over some time to ensure things are working smoothly. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as Insiders, have had the opportunity to try them.
