Today I wanted to share new investment tracking template. You can use it for automatically fetching and tracking investment data such as stock prices and history.

I’m Sam Radakovitz, a Program Manager on Excel. My colleague, Kacyee, recently released the new STOCKHISTORY function to all of you, Office Insiders! We’re combining it with our stock data typesparklines, tables, charts, and more to create the new investment tracking template!

Investment Tracking

How it works

  1. Download the spreadsheet and open it.
  2. Step through the information on the Welcome sheet. Set the theme that best suits you and learn about some basic actions.
  3. On the Portfolio sheet, enter stocks / investments you want to track.
  4. View analysis based on your entries on the other sheets.

Let’s step through some of the interesting functionality on each sheet of the investment tracker:

Welcome Sheet

Learning to add stocks

There are some awesome advantages of using the stock data type to enter the data:

  • You don’t need to know the ticker; just type the company name.
  • Enter new information underneath existing stock data types to create a new one.
  • Type over a stock data type to replace it with a new one.

Theme settings

If you prefer a darker look, you can set it to Dark theme here. The entire template will transition to a dark look overall.

Portfolio Sheet

Investment Tracker template.

This is the main sheet, where you enter your investments and shares to see their current values. You can quickly see the price and current day results. A sparkline shows you the history in the row, and you can adjust the day’s value to see more. For example: change it to 180 to see around six months of history.

As you scroll the sheet, you’ll get additional information such as previous close and industry. You can also see a 52week high and low and a visual that shows you how close each stock is to its high and low.

Dashboard Sheet

The Dashboard sheet shows some of the aggregations from the Portfolio sheet, as well as a breakdown of the overall investments and categories.

Watch Sheet

Here, you can learn about the company and what it does, as well as flag if a stock is within a set percentage of its 52 week high or low.

Compare Sheet

Here you can see all the details for a stock and put it side by side with another stock to compare price, price history, trend, volume, market cap, and a lot more.

Requirements and availability

  • Data types require a Microsoft 365 subscription.
  • The new data types are only available to the Consumer audience in English-speaking markets.
  • The feature is rolling out to Insiders and will be available to users running:
    • Windows: Version 2007 (Build 13029.20006).
    • Mac: Version 16.40 Build 20062901.

Note:  We’re releasing this feature to Beta Channel (Windows) and Insiders Fast (Mac) users between now and October

We typically release features over some time to ensure that things are working smoothly. This is true for Insiders as well. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as Insiders, have had the opportunity to try them.

Feedback

There are a couple of ways to give feedback and suggestions:

  • Click the feedback button in the Trivia workbook attached to this blog post.
  • In Excel for Windows Desktop: Click Help > Feedback.
  • In Excel for Mac: Click the Feedback button near the top-right corner in Excel.
  • Add #XLDataTypes in your feedback so that we can find them easily.

Learn more about what other information you should include in your feedback to ensure it’s actionable and reaches the right people. We’re excited to hear from you!
