Hi Office Insiders, 👋 I’m Michelle Maislen from the Office Graphics team, and am happy to announce inserting Apple photos into Office is easier than ever. You can now insert pictures taken with your iPhone or iPad into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook on Windows! We had heard from many of you that converting these files was too time consuming, so we’ve simplified the process.

Apple photos and Office

HEIF and HEIC image files are used by default for new photos taken on iPhones and iPads and offers a smaller file size and higher image quality than JPEG. Microsoft started supporting the file formats in Office soon after the release of iOS 11. We have since added more support for the image file formats.

Apple photos feature.

How it works

  1. On the Insert tab, select Pictures > From Device.
  2. Select a .HEIF or a .HEIC image file.
  3. Click the Insert button.

You can also drag and drop files from File Explorer into PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook.

Requirements

You will need to have the HEIF Image Extensions and the HEVC Video Extensions installed for this feature to be available. Note, there is a small fee of US $.99 for the HEVC Video Extensions.

Availability

This feature is available to Insider Beta Channel users who are running Windows Version 2006 (Build 13020.10000) or later.

We typically release features over some time to ensure that things are working smoothly. This is true for Insiders as well. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as Insiders, have had the opportunity to try them.
