Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! We are excited to share the availability of a green screen background in Teams meetings in Teams Public Preview.

Green screen background in Teams meetings

Microsoft Teams now supports a green screen which provides an enhanced virtual background effect that improves the sharpness and definition around your face, head, ears, and hair. It also allows props or other objects you hold in your hand to be more visible to other meeting participants.

Requirements

  • This feature requires:
    • A solid color screen or a clean background wall behind you.
    • A flat screen or background wall without stains or other irregularities.
  • Before using the feature, you must:
    • Apply a background effect in Teams meetings to enable the green screen effect.
    • Carefully select the correct backdrop color so that the effect is applied correctly and better quality is achieved.
    • Avoid picking a background color that matches your clothing or props you intend to show on camera.

How it works

  1. After you join a meeting, click the More icon in the meeting toolbar, and then select Video effects.
  2. On the Video effects page, click the Green Screen Settings link under Backgrounds.
  3. On the Settings page, turn on the Green Screen toggle under Camera.
  4. To manually pick a backdrop color, click the backdrop icon in the bottom right corner of the Preview window.

Known limitations

This feature:

  • Is supported only on Windows and macOS devices with Intel and AMD chips. Mac M1/M2 are not supported.
  • Automatically disables background blur and Together Mode, but is compatible with Presenter modes like Standout, Side-by-Side and Reporter, PowerPoint Live Standout, and background replacement (JPEG/PNG).
  • Does not produce good green screen effect when using transparent or translucent objects.
  • Does not properly detect thin objects.

Availability

To be able to use this feature, users need to be members of the Teams Public Preview, and use Windows or macOS Teams client. Other users are not required to be members of the Teams Public Preview.

To enable your Teams client for the Public Preview, IT admins need to set an update policy that turns on Show preview features. Learn how at Public preview in Microsoft Teams.

  • If the Follow Office Preview option is selected, it will automatically enable Teams Public Preview features for any user enrolled in Office Current Channel (Preview). There are no more actions required by the end user.
  • If the Enabled option is selected, the end user must also opt in to Teams public preview in their Teams app to get access to Teams Public Preview features.
