Hi, Office Insiders! I’m Sammy from the Office team and I’m excited to share that we’ve optimized context menus in the Office apps on iPad when using a mouse or trackpad. These improvements are available on the Office Mobile app as well as the standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps for iPad.

Context menus

Last year, we released mouse and trackpad support in the Office apps on iPad. Now, we’ve optimized context menus so you can quickly access commands when using either a mouse or a trackpad. When performing a secondary click while working with files, you’ll notice a vertical context menu along with updated lists of commands.

How it works

  1. Connect a mouse or trackpad to your iPad.
  2. While editing a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, perform a secondary click.

For more information about using a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad with your iPad, check out this Help topic.

Scenarios to Try

  • In Word, click and drag to highlight text, perform a secondary click, and select Link in the context menu to add a link.
  • In Excel, perform a secondary click on a cell and select Comment in the context menu to add a comment.
  • In PowerPoint, perform a secondary click on a picture and select Crop in the context menu to crop the picture.

Availability

This feature is available to users running iPadOS 14 and iOS Version 2.47 (21022805) or higher.

We typically release features over some time to ensure that things are working smoothly. This is true for Insiders as well. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as Insiders, have had the opportunity to try them.
